The oldest German samplers date back to the 16th century.
Nearly simutaneously the first printed model books were
published, first as wood engravings, later in a much
higher quality the patterns were engraved by the artist
himself with an etching needle into a copperplate, like
the model book by Johann Sibmacher from Nuemberg, 1601.
The patterns created by Johann Sibmacher are much more
than motifs for trimming costumes, they are pieces of
art typical of the baroque period. Some of the motifs
and patterns represent the christian tradition like
the lamb of God with the banner of victory and the stag,
others are from a secular context like the mermaids
and the seahorses.
This sampler includes the most beautiful patterns of
the Johann Sibmacher model book next to some borders
and alphabets.
