The most popular motifs are the Instruments of Passion and an elaborate
flower vase. Vavassore published such a vase pattern in Esemplario
di Lavori, Venice, 1532, it was used and embellished over two centuries
for all types of embroidery and lace. The Instruments of the Passion
are usually linked to the Catholic faith. Unlike the patterns and
motifs, the arrangement of horizonal bands does not seem to be continued
into the 18th century. Apart from the floral and one geometric repeat
pattern and a complete alphabet, the horizonal divisions are used
for different pictorial or design themes, all finely worked, the
stitches accurate but with little variety (Humphrey, Carol: Samplers.
