German samplers, with their numerous motifs, are a feast for the
eyes. They contain many symbolic designs based on biblical stories
and secular life. They include one or more alphabets in various
forms, but verses are not found on these pieces.
Generally, spelled names were not found. This sampler from the
Wuerttembergisches Landesmuseum, Stuttgart is more than 250 years
old.
Next to surface filling you find four alphabets, stripes with geometrical
and plant patterns, flowers in a vase, and a cartouche, which enclose
the initals I S L. More striking are the symbolical crucifixion
with the instruments of torture and of course the Sibmacher motifs.
Many thanks to the staff of the Wuerttembergisches
Landesmuseum, Stuttgart, for sending us photos and their kind support.
