Different Braids - SAMPLERS ACCORDING TO OLD MOTIFS   Charts and kits

Baroque Braids

You find Sibmachers Lamb of God in the middle of the sampler surrounded by several baroque borders. In former times "The motifs are rarely the embroideresses' own creations; rather, they can be traced back to a very old treasure-trove of shapes which may well have been spread in Central Europe by silk fabrics imported from the Orient and from Italy ... Fashion, too, had a significant part to play since articles of clothing and household textiles had been decorated with embroideries ever since the early 16th century. In this way, collections of various trimming ribbons began to enjoy a great deal of popularity" (see: Anne Wanner-JeanRichard: Muster und Zeichen gestickt und gesammelt auf textilem Grund, page 9)

Alpine Braids

On this sampler you find two alphabets, several trimming ribbons and the trees of life. All the motifs are typical for South Germany, Austria and Switzerland and were stitched over more than 300 years.

Swiss Braids

This sampler is inspired by Swiss samplers, often stitched only with one colour, white. They are of a striking square shape measuring roughly 50/ 50 cm. The patterns you find on the sampler were stitched for more than 300 years and decorated not only samplers, but textiles for daily use like bed and table linen. The favorite colours to embroider the family linen were red and black.
