The design of this sampler was inspired by an old Alpine
bedspread from the year 1802 shown in the book "Stickmustertücher"
by Eva Maria Leszner. (Eva Maria Leszner: Stickmustertücher.
Mit drei großen Musterbögen, Rosenheim, 3.
Aufl. 1997, S. 9.)
The patterns for the little birds were first printed
in the model book by Peter Quentell, published in Cologne
in the year 1533. Those same patterns were stitched
for more than 300 years and decorated not only samplers,
but textiles for daily use like bed and table linen.
The favourite colours to embroider the family linen
were red and black.
